Series and immigration: ‘The Best Immigrant’ and ‘All Heroes Are Bastards’

Sections Projection

Serielizados Fest presents a thematic session dedicated to exploring the migration crisis, systemic racism, and the dynamics of social exclusion from two groundbreaking audiovisual perspectives: dystopian thriller and the subversion of the superhero genre.

In The Best Immigrant, we find ourselves in an independent Flanders in a painfully near future, where a far-right government decrees the mass deportation of all foreign residents. On the verge of being separated after their arrest, Muna and Jamal play their final card by entering The Best Immigrant, a ruthless reality show in which contestants compete against each other to win a residence permit. A chilling and urgent dystopia on the fragility of institutions and the dehumanization of contemporary political discourse.

Meanwhile, All Heroes Are Bastards, created by the minds behind the musical rap phenomenon Hype (Esra and Patrick Phul), twists the superhero genre by transplanting it into a hyper-realistic setting. When a mysterious artifact bestows superpowers upon Malik, Dina, and Hamza, the group must not only rescue kidnapped children in their neighborhood, but also face racism, disinformation, and social marginalization. Halfway between Misfits, The Boys and X-Men, the series uses action and fantasy as a mirror for the racial tensions of our society.

Both series will be screened in original version (English) with Catalan subtitles.
Approximate duration of the session: 120 min.
Presentation by journalist Lorenzo Mejino.
