Podcast+Documental: Sopa de Miso and ‘The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness’

21 October, 2022 17:30

We celebrate the genius of Hayao Miyazaki and the legacy of legendary studio Ghibli with a double session that includes a special edition of our anime podcast and the re-release of the documentary ‘The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness’.

Who has not wanted to enter the world of Chihiro, Poco Rosso or Totoro? The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness is a documentary film that brings the unique opportunity to delve into the creative process, not exempt of madness, of master Miyazaki.

Before the screening of the documentary at Phenomena, in Barcelona, the first live edition of the anime podcast produced by Serielizados, Sopa de miso, will take place. Hosted by Mariona Borrull and Adriana Díaz, the special edition fo this podcast is dedicated, of course, to the universe of Miyazaki and Ghibli. It will also be the opener for the second season of the podcast, being the first one to be performed live.

After that, the big screen will be the place to experience Miyazaki’s life and work first-hand thanks to The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness. The documentary, directed by filmmaker Mami Sunada, had its Spanish premiere in 2014 at the San Sebastian Film Festival but is currently not available, so this session of Serielizados Fest will be its return to theaters and a new opportunity to see the film.

While shooting The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness, Mami Sunada enjoyed free access for a year, to the inside of Studio Ghibli, following not only its key figure, but also other big names that have made Studio Ghibli a true iconic animation studio such as producer Toshio Suzuki and Ghibli’s elusive “other” director Isao Takahata, who died in 2018.

During that period of time, Ghibli was immersed in the creation of titles such as Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises and Takahata’s The Tale of Princess Kaguya. The result is a delightful and unique look at the working methods of one of the world’s most celebrated animation studios, a portrait of their dreams and passion, but also a dedication that borders on insanity.
