AI ADRIAN TO THE RESCUE

AI Adrian, a peculiar robot made from recycled parts, arrives to help a small Finnish village after a major local company goes bankrupt. He visits people of all ages, whose reactions to his strange appearance and conflicting opinions generate both criticism and admiration. While the villagers debate whether artificial intelligence can ever save the village or replace humans, Adrian’s presence helps them interact and understand each other in times of difficulty. This is a playful yet profound documentary showing how a community reacts to a crisis.

In 2025, AI is rapidly approaching human-level intelligence amid copyright battles, regulatory policies, and professional uncertainties. We didn’t ask for it. Yet all public media are adapting. At the same time, questions arise: when will our daily operations become obsolete? How fun will human life be in an AI-controlled world? What kind of society do we want to live in? Kåre V. Poulsen analyzes the big picture, the pros and cons of generative AI for citizens, journalists, society, and public service media.

Ahead of the 2024 Belgian elections, 150 final-year students directly question three politicians in a unique format presented by Tom Waes and journalist Pieterjan De Smedt. Each episode tackles a key topic, debating it and highlighting the political challenges it entails. The program bridges youth concerns with electoral discourse, preparing new voters to exercise their right to vote by confronting leaders face-to-face. Informative and engaging, First Choice redefines political programming by centering young voices and experiences.

POINTER FACTCHECK
Netherlands, 6’, political analysis, VRT
During a 10-day “fact-checking marathon” in Brussels for the 2024 European elections, Dutch and Belgian media teams verified political statements and viral influencer claims about immigration, climate, and EU institutions. Results were published daily on NPO channels and online, with short versions on social media and interactive quizzes. Pointer Factcheck showed not only what was true or false but also how conclusions were reached, giving viewers tools to recognize misinformation in real time.

GENDER, INTERNET, AND EMOTION IN DOCUMENTARY FORMATS

In Quebec and worldwide, more and more young people embrace ideological conservatism. This investigation follows influencers inspired by Andrew Tate, examining their views on masculinity, distrust in the system, and focus on dominance and success. Listening to and contrasting all voices, the documentary asks whether reconciliation is possible. With national attention, school screenings, and over 1.5 million trailer views, Alphas breaks stereotypes by analyzing the roots of a movement redefining male identity in the digital age.

DRAG IN ME
Taiwan, 36’, documentary, PTS
In this intimate debut, what begins as a filmmaker Quinn Chen’s project about his queer teacher Kinky Mama evolves into a personal journey exploring his own drag identity. Facing challenges with family, partner, and society, Chen explores the intersection of masculinity, femininity, and queer identity in Taiwan, where legal progress coexists with persistent prejudice. Awarded Best Documentary at the New Taipei City Student Video Rising Star Awards and warmly received by audiences and specialized organizations, Drag in Me shows self-expression as a brave and ongoing process.

WINGMAN

Jeppe, a young man with cerebral palsy, has always relied on his friends Kåre and David to communicate with the world. Unable to speak, his voice has always been theirs through a shared system. Just as his friends must step aside, Jeppe is invited to give a talk in Mexico, where he will use his newfound independence and vulnerability to direct his own documentary. Sharing it, he reveals new truths to his friends, who hear his genuine voice for the first time. An emotional portrait of friendship and identity, innovatively told.

HOKKAI DOUGA BLOCK NO. 1000

In the center of Sapporo, a 2,700 m² lot called Senbanchi housed a century-old wooden building with a bar, a remnant of the area’s peripheral past. Its patrons shared drinks, jokes, and life stories until it closed in March 2024 for a new apartment block. This documentary captures the voices of owners, clients, and developers, showing the final moments of the space. In the face of Hokkaido’s rapid transformation, Block No. 1000 reflects on what is lost, what remains, and how memories and communities survive when physical spaces disappear.

MAGIC MOVES

At a two-week camp in a historic castle, ten children with unilateral hemiparesis learn magic tricks under the guidance of famous magicians, supported by doctors and therapists from the University Clinic of Munich. The program explores whether magic can improve motor skills, confidence, and independence, culminating in a performance for family and friends. Magic Moves combines science, performance, and emotion to show that new therapeutic approaches can inspire hope, with magic fostering self-esteem and resilience.

MY UNSEEN STORY

In this powerful series, ten children share deeply personal experiences, from growing up with deaf parents or in foster families to their journeys as refugees. The program allows children to tell their stories in their own words and uses animation to gently visualize difficult memories, creating universal and relatable portraits. With extensive Flemish media coverage and broadcast on the adult channel VRT1, My Unseen Story emphasizes the importance of addressing sensitive topics from a child’s perspective.

This TikTok channel brings art to young audiences unfamiliar with the classical canon, offering fun, strange, or fictional anecdotes that disguise artistic education as pure entertainment. A bread-crust-shaped mascot, “Knust,” stars in surreal adventures through art history with a playful and irreverent tone. Prioritizing brief, engaging impact, Untitled 3000 successfully opens the door to art appreciation, showing that humor and accessibility can spark curiosity where formal education may not.

RAMADAN BITES
Netherlands, 6’, social media capsule, NPO
During Ramadan, this digital comedy channel offers daily sketches, stand-up, musical parodies, and collaborations with influencers from the Islamic community. Broadcast on TikTok, Instagram, and WhatsApp, it reaches a massive and loyal audience: 8 million TikTok views, 5.8 million unique visitors, and strong re-engagement. Created by a predominantly Muslim team, Ramadan Bites combines humor, cultural relevance, and community spirit, celebrating faith and coexistence through over 100 short videos.

Presented by charismatic YouTuber Alharith Obaid, this documentary series connects with Finnish youth through candid conversations on topics like addictions, national defense, and rural life. With a direct, humble, and non-judgmental style, Alharith gives voice to overlooked generations and groups, fostering dialogue and community. The series, highly focused on its target audience, achieved nearly five million views and changed perceptions of Yleisradio among some critical viewers.

Breaking the talk-show mold, For Once invites ordinary people in Canadian media to converse unscripted with interviewers who have a personal connection to them (friends, colleagues, admirers). Prioritizing authenticity over self-promotion, the program offers unique human connections on screen, making each encounter a genuine emotional journey.

This playful and informative program explores sexuality from historical, cultural, and biological perspectives, combining lively studio debates (between host Saaya and a condom-shaped puppet) with educational videos, making delicate topics accessible and fun. The episode on nudity compares global attitudes, from ancient Greece to Japanese norms, revealing surprising curiosities. The one on female genitals mixes biological facts, such as hyena anatomy or sperm storage in ants, with self-care advice.
