The 12th edition of Serielizados reveals the series competing in the International Official Selection

Serielizados – Barcelona Series Festival reveals the six series that will compete in the International Official Selection of its 12th edition, which will take place in Barcelona from November 3rd to 12th. The festival also announces additional international guests, jury members, and other selected titles.

Series in Competition – International Official Selection

A Better Man

Norway, Lithuania. Created by Thomas Seeberg Torjussen.

A provocative psychological thriller about online harassment, gender roles, and cancel culture. One of the breakout titles at series festivals worldwide. A new series from the creator of Kuppel 16, selected at Serielizados 2023. After its festival screening, the full series will premiere on Filmin at a later date

A Life’s Worth

Sweden, France. Created by Mona Masri and Oliver Dixon.

A war drama about the moral dilemmas faced by UN Peacekeepers during the Bosnian War in 1993, and the high cost of trying to maintain peace. The series opens the door to an essential debate about one of the most violent conflicts in recent European history.

Empathie

Canada. Created by Florence Longpré.

A psychological drama with touches of humor exploring mental health from within a psychiatric institution. Created and starred by Canadian Florence Longpré, who was previously selected at Serielizados with both Le temps des framboises and Audrey’s Back.

Reykjavik Fusion

Iceland. Created by Hörður Rúnarsson and Birkir Blær Ingólfsson.

A series starring Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Severance) about a disgraced chef who risks everything to redeem himself. A fresh take on culinary series, confirming the rise of Nordic fiction beyond traditional noir. After the festival, the full series will premiere exclusively in Spain on AMC+ in the coming months.

Riot Women

United Kingdom. Creada por Sally Wainwright.

Five mature women form a punk rock band to enter a local talent contest. Created by Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley) and starring acclaimed British actresses such as Tamsin Greig, Joanna Scanlan, and Rosalie Craig. International premiere at Serielizados.

The Danish Woman

Iceland, France. Created by Benedikt Erlingsson.

Actress Trine Dyrholm (Rematch) plays a former Danish Secret Service agent who moves to Iceland seeking anonymity. Following the film Woman at War, Icelandic filmmaker Benedikt Erlingsson continues his portrayal of rebellious women in a satire about the odyssey of social absurdities.

Guests of the International Official Selection

Creator and screenwriter Sally Wainwright, author of Happy Valley, one of the most influential titles in recent British television, will attend the festival to offer a masterclass on her career and to present her latest series, Riot Women. Icelandic actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, known for series such as Severance, Trap, Lady Dynamite, and Somebody Somewhere, will attend the 12th Serielizados – Barcelona Series Festival to present Reykjavik Fusion alongside its co-creator Hörður Rúnarsson and producer and screenwriter Jónas Margeir Ingólfsson.

Representing The Danish Woman, Trine Dyrholm (lead actress) and Benedikt Erlingsson (creator and director) will visit the festival. Dyrholm is one of Denmark’s most renowned actresses and has appeared in films and series such as The Needle Girl, Rematch, Mary & George, Queen of Hearts, In a Better World, Love Is All You Need, and Thomas Vinterberg’s films The Commune and Celebration. Meanwhile, Benedikt Erlingsson is an internationally acclaimed Icelandic filmmaker, known for Of Horses and Men, awarded at the San Sebastián Film Festival, and Woman at War.

Additionally, journalist and screenwriter Mona Masri will present the series A Life’s Worth alongside its director, Ahmed Abdullahi. Masri acted in Nadine Labaki’s film Caramel and has contributed to the scripts of series such as Copenhagen Cowboy by Nicolas Winding Refn and Easy Money.

Juries and Awards

The jury that will award the series competing in the International Official Selection will be composed of Paloma Rando (Jury President and DAMA member), screenwriter of Mariliendre; Javier Giner (DAMA member), creator of I, Adict, winner of the National Official Selection last year; and Iria del Río, known for her role in the series The New Years.

Meanwhile, the jury for the National Official Selection will consist of Norwegian creator and actress Henriette Steenstrup, known for the series Pørni; Argentine critic Diego Batlle; and Jana Daedelow, coordinator of the Berlinale Series Market.

The series competing in the National Official Selection will be announced soon. The juries of each section will decide the following awards: Best Series, Best Script, and Best Performance. The selected titles will also compete for the Popitas Audience Award and the SAE-CEV Young Jury Award.

International Titles Out of Competition

In addition to the series selected for competition in the International Official Section, Serielizados will also screen more titles in person within the Panorama section, a showcase featuring the most outstanding series of the year on an international level.

The festival will premiere Nepobaby, the new series co-created by Henriette Steenstrup, who will present it during her stay as a jury member at the festival. This drama-comedy fiction follows a young woman who suddenly discovers she is the heir to one of Norway’s wealthiest dynasties. With echoes of Succession, it is one of the most acclaimed European series of the year.

Serielizados will also host the national premiere of The Gold, a British series boasting a star- studded cast including Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), Dominic Cooper (Preacher), Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation), Tom Cullen (Weekend), and Stefanie Martini (The Last Kingdom). The series centers on one of the most significant criminal operations in British history: the accidental theft of gold bars valued at £26 million.

The Belgian series Putain (Special Mention in the International Panorama Section of the Séries Mania Festival) will also be screened. The story follows a teenager who runs away from home when his mother returns with an ex-lover marked by a drug-related past. After their festival screenings, both The Gold and Putain will be fully released later on the Filmin platform. Another highlighted title in the lineup is the Swedish series Vanguard, which chronicles the meteoric rise of its protagonist in the Nordic media and telecommunications industries during the 1970s and 1980s.

The festival also continues to support documentaries. It will exclusively premiere the Norwegian docuseries The Agent – The Life and Lies of My Father, which has become one of the season’s sensations. The series begins with a mysterious confession from a father to his son: “I am a secret agent.” This childhood memory leads to a fascinating family investigation uncovering a life full of secrets and lies.

Additionally, the festival will screen feature-length documentaries related to television, pop culture, and the media. Among them is ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!, a film exploring the history of an iconic Mexican restaurant in the U.S. that became a pop culture myth thanks to South Park and is known for its delirious aesthetic. When the show’s creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, discover it might close, they decide to save and restore it.

Podcat: Literaturium de series

The 12th edition of Serielizados will host the podcast Literaturium de sèries, a humorous panel show where comedians Àlex Martínez Vidal, Tomàs Fuentes, Ignasi Taltavull, and Enzo Vizcaíno come together to discuss and review the best TV series of the year. This special session is a unique adaptation of their usual podcast, Literaturium, which typically focuses on annual literary recommendations. For this occasion, however, the podcast shifts its focus entirely to the world of television series. This event is exclusive and can only be experienced as part of the festival

Premiere of the series Pubertat, by Leticia Dolera

As previously announced, the festival will offer a preview before its usual dates with the premiere of the series Pubertat, by Leticia Dolera, on September 25th at Sala 5 of the Mooby Aribau cinemas. Leticia Dolera and the series’ artistic team will be present. This session is organized by HBO Max España in collaboration with Serielizados.
